Character Breakdown: Donkey Kong: Just a Big Ol' Ape No Longer

The character of Donkey Kong in Smash is a bit complicated. As one of the original twelve, almost all of his moves were developed around DK from Donkey Kong Country, and it shows. Think of the iconic Donkey Kong elements: Bananas and Barrels. Yet neither of these appear in DK's moveset. Granted, these elements weren't established in 2000, but this basic moveset stands out when being used by our modern Donkey Kong. So let's start fixing this, shall we?

Donkey Kong's neutral special is the Giant Punch, a move that, as far as I can tell, has no origin from ANY Donkey Kong game. So let's make this move make some sense. I propose we make this move the Barrel.

Donkey Kong's been throwing barrels since 1981, and that became the main way of getting your partner in the Country series. This would give DK a slow-moving, rolling projectile.

Hey look! A dead meme!
The side special is also pretty terrible. It's called the Headbutt. It's a headbutt. Since Diddy Kong is not included in this hypothetical Super Smash Bros. Rebirth, let's make Donkey's side-B, Diddy's down-B, the Banana Peel.

This would cover both of our iconic elements, and we would leave one classic move: the up-B. That pretty much covers it, so if you have any suggestions, leave them in the comments.

A Minimal Smash Game

Around the time of Smash 4's release, Sakurai confirmed that he most likely would not be on board for Smash 5. However, Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aimé has all-but confirmed that a Smash Bros. game would be on the Switch. If we assume that the game will not be a Smash 4 port, what will the game look like? Considering it will be under new developers, I have a feeling the game will be very... minimal. In making a roster for this hypothetical game, I thought about the essentials of modern Nintendo. I made a roster, with and without unlockable fighters. So when you boot-up "Super Smash Bros. Rebirth," here's what you see: The roster includes: Mario Bowser Pikachu Jigglypuff Link Ganondorf Donkey Kong Inkling Kirby King Dedede Robin Sonic Mii Brawler Mii Swordfighter Mii Gunner I know, its not a lot. Only 15 characters. When I said minimal, I meant MINIMAL. However, I think I captured the essence of modern Nintendo. All the icons of Nintendo'...

Smash Rebirth: Pokémon and Link - A Massive Overhaul

Pokémon I'm not going to claim to be a Pokémon expert. As such, I can't really say if these moves are accurate to the original Pokémon games. However videos like  RelaxAlax's "Know Your Moves" series  have educated me on just how accurate the Pokémon are. Having played very little of the Pokémon games this is pretty much all I have to go on. Jigglypuff has moves that are very iconic to her, so I think that these moves have become part of the character's identity. Pikachu could maybe use work, but as of right now, I can't say much on that topic.   Link However, on to the main event! The Hero of... I'm not sure, actually. When coming up with a revised moveset for Link, I was torn between a more traditional Link and a " Breath of the Wild (BotW) " style one. When thinking about how iconic the the Hero Clad in Green is, I didn't want to sacrifice that iconography for a current, but temporary Link. However, in my deliberation I r...

Addendum: Mario's Final Smash

I think Mario's Final Smash should be something truly iconic to him. When thinking of Mario iconography, there's only one true winner of "Most Recognizable:" The Mushroom. Up-Taunt For all one of you out there who don't know, Mario's mushroom let's him grow in size, similar to his  up-taunt.  For the final smash, I suggest we make Mario this size and have him rampage through the stage, like in " New SUPER MARIO BROS ." for the Nintendo DS.
