When making my roster for Smash Rebirth, Mario was one of the first characters that was added. No matter what era of Nintendo's video games you're talking about, Mario is almost always been in the spotlight. Previous Smash games have actually had a pretty good move set for the plumber. He functions as an entry point for players picking the game up for the first time. As such, his moves should be fairly simple, like he is in all Smash games. Just punches and kicks, but not without references to his series in his specials and taunts. However, some of the references are very outdated. Particularly, his current side special, down special, and down taunt. So, I think it's time Mario got a modern update.
Currently, his side special is his dinky old cape from Super Mario World. It doesn't even function like a recovery, similar to it's origin game! I propose we don't change the function, we change the animation. Instead of the cape, we use the raccoon power, which recently returned in "New SUPER MARIO BROS. 2." He would use the tail to reflect, similar to it's in-game function.
Down special would get a similar makeover, with a change in animation AND function. Currently, the down special is the "Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device" or F.L.U.D.D., which first appeared is "Super Mario Sunshine" for the Gamecube.
At the time of Brawl's release, this was an element of modern Mario, but now... not so much. We need a move for Mario that's timeless. As it turn's out we used to have one. The Mario Tornado may seem completely made up for Smash, but Mario's been spinning since "Super Mario World."
Lastly, down taunt. While it is a nice reference to Donkey Kong, I think Mario should focus on the "Super Mario" line of games. This taunt should reference one of the 3D games. Perhaps something with F.L.U.D.D. or Cappy from the yet to be released "Super Mario Odyssey." Anything would work here, I just feel like we have our references to the 2D games covered.
Do you have any other suggestions? Leave them in the comments! See you all in the next one. Bye.
